The aim of this poetry lesson is to encourage students to be creative and to explore their imagination and emotions in a new and exciting way. There is no "right" or "wrong" when writing poetry, therefore teachers might encourage their students to create their own rules. Individual poems can be as long or as short as the student wants - as serious or silly, happy or sad, light or dark, etc. The one rule teachers are encouraged to follow is to ask the students not to rhyme. Oftentimes, students become so focused on rhyming that the creative flow and self-expression in poetry is lost. It also teaches them that poems do not have to rhyme. The most important thing is to create an environment that is fun, creative, accepting and makes writing poetry exciting.
