Figures of speech in music lyrics
Ms Maria Cutajar, teacher of English at the St Margaret College MS (Cospicua), sent us the following material and write-up:
This material was used to teach poetry and revise figures of speech specifically. In order to cater for students’ varied interests, I had edited YouTube videos myself to present students with snippets of music and song lyrics from popular songs which also demonstrate different figures of speech and their explanation. I then created PowerPoint presentations with tiered and scaffolded activities which ranged from lower- to higher-order thinking skills. The fact that the videos also contain the explanation and the availability of the video online after its use in the classroom, facilitates recall and scaffolding, and lends itself very well to endless possibilities for the teacher’s adaptation of the material to cater for students’ different readiness levels and learning styles. I felt that the students I used the material and lessons with were very engaged and found them very interesting and effective and I wanted to share.
