Video call with classroom in Ghana
Following International Education Day on January 24th, the importance of education as a human right was discussed in class. Through a collaboration with NGO Right 2 Smile and St Thomas Aquinas Junior High School in Ghana, a video call was set up between the two classrooms.
The project was explained to the students and while some of them volunteered or were encouraged to prepare a short introduction of themselves, curiosities and questions they would ask the students from Ghana during our next call were elicited and discussed.
On the day, the speaking was mostly done by the students themselves. They greeted each other, introduced themselves and shared their interests. The mischievous and talkative one was quite shy compared to the usual. On the other hand, the ones who are usually shy and reluctant to participate asked to introduce themselves, even though they hadn’t prepared anything beforehand! Everyone seemed engaged and interested to learn more about the other students.
It was different from the usual role play we do every fortnight to practice their speaking. It was real.
It has been amazing to see their interest following the call too. One student mentioned that she went home to look up information on which languages they speak in Ghana. They also suggested we exchange postcards and discuss new topics during our next video call.
